I worked for a very large company that needed the capacity that is provided by a CDN without having to invest in global infrastructure.Ĭloudflare/Aklamai/Fastly are cloud based CDN vendors.į5 has a lot of different products, both on-prem, virtual and cloud based. There were extensive iRules there to facilitate routing requests to different pools of servers and to deal with availablity. I wrote an iRule that would drop incoming cookies that were not on the change controlled allow list.į5s were also used for east /west traffic - internal API calls from groups of internal hosts that are not internet facing. As an example, developers continually added cookies until they exceeded request header size. I also used the F5 to configure WAF and enforce policy in some places where it was necessary.

We could take down portions of the infrastructure and use the F5 to route traffic between various pods that we could take offline to do maintenance without service interruption. We used the F5 to deal with load balancing and high availability coming from CDN. It did load balancing for the incoming requests coming from the CDN. One was used for North / South traffic, i.e. The CDN has thousands of physical locations all over the globe that we did not intend to replicate. The CDN provided other services like DOS, WAF, global caching, global DNS, etc. Since it was at the edge of our network, it made sense to use both offerings. It cached static files and brought response time down by keeping content physically closer to the users.
